Year-Round Schools...Yea or Nay?

Have you ever been alone in your home or apartment and become sick? Did you wish you had your mom or some significant other with you during that time? I just talked with my single son who lives alone in another city and discovered that he is experiencing some sickness, flu or some such virus. He didn't say that he wanted someone with him and I am sure that he is fine; however, as any normal mom would feel, I wanted to be there with him to help meet his needs. I know that he's a grown man and will do fine but that old "mother hen" complex kicks in. Do we ever turn loose completely? I don't know any moms, or dads for that matter, who don't want to help their children in their times of need.

The major news today seemed to have been focusing on year-round schools. The adjoining county's board of education met to decide if year-round schools would be best for several of their middle schools. Parents were presenting their pros and cons but the board decided that 3 of them would change to this system. I have mixed feelings about this but I do believe that it is more cost effective, that this can alleviate some of the overcrowded conditions. I also believe that, if such an arrangement is present, that parents who oppose the plan should at least be allowed to transport their children to the school of their choice. I understand that some states who were deeply involved in year-round schools have recently reverted to the traditional nine-month plan. So much of education works in cycles, usually in about 7 year cycles. One year, children are homogeneously grouped, the next year, heterogenous grouping is best, Children are mainstreamed one year, self-contained the next; back and forth, forth and back. I have learned that children will learn despite us. What's your view?
